Making a billion dollars is no child’s play, but Barbie, under the masterful direction of Greta Gerwig, has achieved this astonishing feat, leaving audiences worldwide dazzled and delighted. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film soared past the $1 billion milestone at the global box office on a momentous Sunday, August 6, becoming the biggest summer blockbuster.

As announced by Warner Bros Pictures on Sunday, revealing that the movie raked in a staggering $459 million from North American theaters and an additional $572.1 million from overseas markets over the weekend. Combining these impressive numbers, the film’s total worldwide earnings soared to a jaw-dropping $1.0315 billion (A$1.56 billion, £800 million), confirmed by Comscore.

Comparing to The Super Mario Bros, Barbie’s ticket sales now ranked second this year which raked in $1.357bn at the box office.

Before crossing the billion-dollar mark, Barbie had already etched its name in history, making Greta Gerwig the highest-grossing female director of all time, surpassing the legendary success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017). With $880 million in its purse before the weekend, Barbie had already conquered Chris Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s record of $845 million.

Margot Robbie, not only the lead star but also an executive producer through her production company LuckyChap, was resolute in her belief in Barbie’s potential. In an interview, Robbie emphasized how pairing a visionary director like Greta Gerwig with a captivating concept, as exemplified by films like Jurassic Park and Steven Spielberg, could spell box office magic.

“I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig,'” Robbie recalled during her pitch meeting. “And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!”
