Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar never shies away from expressing his opinions on any topics. Recently, he was in the USA when he was asked about his son Farhan Akhtar’s whereabouts. Sharing his opinions on the same during an interview, he stated that the father-son duo schedule their meetings three-five days in advance. While talking about the topic, he mentioned that earlier calling relatives before going to their house was considered an American phenomenon, however things have changed now.
Akhtar explained that he has a “very small family” consisting of his kids Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, and his wife Shabana Azmi. He stays with his wife while his kids have separate homes. He recalled how during his younger days relatives calling each other before visiting each other, which happened in the US or England, seemed shocking. However, people in India too are living that life and “it feels perfectly fine.”

He added that when he came to the US, people constantly asked him about Farhan’s whereabouts. The veteran went on to express his opinion that they call and make appointments to meet each other. Quoted by News 18, he said, “When I came here, some people asked me ‘You didn’t get Farhan along with you?’ Is he jobless or what? I have to call him before seeing him, or he calls me to ask when we can meet. Usually, we fix an appointment that’s after 3-5 days. This is bound to happen. Such is life”
Expressing how it was alright, the 79-year-old lyricist said, “Being too dominant on your children is a little unnatural.” Giving an example on the same, he shared that animals also bring up their kids with love and even go as far as dying for them. However when they grow up, they leave them. He adds, “It’s just us humans who like to dictate to their 40-year-old children about what is right and wrong. It’s extremely unnatural.”

On the work front, Farhan Aktar is currently celebrating his 51st birthday. He will be next seen in 120 Bahadur. A tribute to Major Shaitan Singh Bhati PVC and the soldiers of Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon Regiment. The film is set to release on November 21, 2025. For those who don’t know, the film is set against the backdrop of 1962 Indo-China War.
