Vishal Dadlani Schools Indian Idol 15 Contestant For Mimicking Arijit Singh: ‘Restaurant Mein Gaate Reh Jaoge.’

While judging on the 15th season of the Indian Idol show, singer-lyricist Vishal Dadlani schooled a contestant for imitating renowned Bollywood singers. Lakshya Mehta, a 21-year old contestant from Punjab’s Amritsar, sang Atif Aslam’s ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ and ‘Tum Kya Mile,’ by Arijit Singh, during the audition. “You are singing well, BUT,” the 51-year-old frontman of Indian rock band Pentagram remarked, “Tum apna nahi gaa rahe ho!” He further jibed,

(This is Indian Idol that produces Idol. You won’t go far by being a copycat of someone.) Vishal appreciated the contestant’s vocals, stating that he really liked his voice; however, the imitation put the judge off.

Indian Idol, the popular Indian music competition, first premiered in 2004 and Vishal Dadlani has been a judge at the show since 2013, including the two seasons of Indian Idol Junior (Hindi). The show is based on British music competition series Pop Idol that ran between 2001 and 2003. Season one of the Indian Idol show was helmed by judges Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam, along with Anu Malik. Abhijeet Sawant bagged the inaugural title of Indian Idol, while Bhilai-based Amit Sana was the runner-up. The 14th season was judged by Kumar Sanu, Shreya Ghosal, Hussain Kuwajerwala, and Vishal Dadlani, with Vaibhav Gupta as the winner. The upcoming 15th season of the show will premiere on the telly on October 26.
