Selena Gomez’s Ombré Lip Is a Gothic Twist on a Classic Red

Selena Gomez’s glam on the promo run for her latest film Emilia Pérez has been steeped in sensual, fall-ready color palettes, with manicure moments oscillating from muted tones to deep burgundy zones. This time, she’s taken those deeper colors to her lips, edging into more gothic glam with a dramatic ombré lip.

Gomez attended the IndieWire Honors on December 5, where she accepted the Spotlight Award for the already highly acclaimed film. The Rare Beauty founder wore a Ralph Lauren tuxedo dress, a sultry twist on menswear that was then amped up by her beauty choices.

Her makeup was done by long-time collaborator and makeup artist Hung Vanngo (who also works with Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, and Scarlett Johansson). For this occasion, Vanngo opted for the multi-dimensional lip combo using Gomez’s own Rare Beauty, of course: the Kind Words Matte Lip Liners in shades Strong and Devoted, and Kind Words Matte Lipstick in Devoted.

The neutral eyeshadow and soft winged liner kept the focus on Gomez’s spin on a wintry red. While it’s a high-drama look, the darker gradient that’s achieved with the liners is easily replicable by building subtly, with some soft smudging. Plus, the ombré technique makes it totally wearable for when the red wine gets passed around this festive season. Wine lips? It’s the look.

Gomez’s slick and sleek hair was also done by regular glam team member and celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora. Her nails were a wet-look burgundy, done by Tom Bachik using Apres Nails’ “Firework Gallery.” As usual, Gomez was styled by Erin Walsh.

“I’m incredibly grateful for this recognition,” Gomez told the audience. “To be seen for taking risks and for pushing myself in new directions means everything to me. Emilia Pérez was a challenge, but it reminded me why I love storytelling. It’s about finding the courage to step into spaces you’ve never been before.” She thanked the film’s director, Jacques Audiard, her costars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, as well as her fans for their support. “This is just the beginning,” she said.
