New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is launching an investigation into the reported increase in suicides among tribal people in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala. The NHRC’s action follows a media report that revealed 23 deaths by suicide in 2024 alone, raising alarm bells about the well-being of this vulnerable community, a press release by the organisation stated.
The NHRC, in the release, expressed serious concerns over the potential violation of human rights, particularly the right to life and the social, economic, and cultural rights of the Scheduled Tribes in the region. The Commission highlighted the responsibility of the state to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
According to rough estimates shared by the organisation, approximately 138 suicides occurred in the Peringammala Panchayat area between 2011 and 2022, indicating a recurring pattern.
