Zomato Reacts To Suspicious Single-Dish Restaurants On Platform; Internet Unrolls Ganja Memes

A user on X/Twitter shared screenshots of alleged drugs being sold on food delivery app Zomato. Shady restaurants with single dishes costing not less than Rs 999 were listed on the app’s Chandigarh region. The absurdly priced dishes and the non-existent addresses of the restaurants raised suspicion amongst users. One restaurant listed Naughty Strawberry Juice at Rs 999. Similarly, ‘Blue Adventure,’ a single dish on the Butter Chicken Factory, cost Rs 1205, without the delivery charges. The X user posted several other single-dish restaurants on Zomato Chandigarh, including Kiwi Delight Mojito (Rs 1305), Citrus Punch (Rs 1485), Merry Berry (Rs 1485), and Green Apple Soda (Rs 1501). The curious user tried to order from one of the restaurants, but after a long wait, the order was canceled with a full refund. Another user confirmed the same about the order. Netizens suspected that these were fronts for either the sale of contraband or money laundering.

Zomato responded to the allegation without referring to the specific post, aggravating the user’s suspicion that the drug accusation might be genuine. The food delivery giant stated in its X/Twitter post that the company has identified such single-dish restaurants and delisted the same. The firm also claimed to have probed other restaurants with limited menus and might have listed prohibited items or a workaround to get one listed. Zomato stated that it actively blocks illicit items, including alcohol, vapes, cigarettes, cigars, etc.

Meanwhile, netizens slammed Zomato for “trying to distract from drugs being allegedly sold on its platform,” with its latest alleged PR stunt of hiring a Chief of Staff who would pay the company Rs 20 lakh without themselves getting paid for a year. Netizens called it a masterclass in reputation management to douse the drug’s buzz online.
