What is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis?
ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Widely known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famed baseball player diagnosed with it in the 1930s, ALS gradually degenerates and destroys motor neurons responsible for voluntary muscle movements.

The progression of ALS leads to loss of muscle control and eventual paralysis. Individuals afflicted with the disease may experience difficulties in speech, swallowing, and breathing, along with muscle weakness and atrophy.
