China Urges Ceasefire in Gaza, Offers Support

China’s special envoy on the Middle East, veteran diplomat Zhai Jun, is actively engaged in efforts to mediate a ceasefire and restore peace to the escalating conflict in Gaza.

Zhai, who recently participated in the Cairo peace summit alongside United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, expressed deep concern over the situation in Gaza during his ongoing tour of the region.

He acknowledged the severe nature of the conflict and the apprehension surrounding the potential for a large-scale ground conflict.

China is committed to facilitating dialogue and ceasefire negotiations while maintaining close communication with the international community.

The latest outbreak of violence commenced on October 7 when Hamas initiated a surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,400 individuals and the capture of over 200 people.

Israel promptly responded with military force, effectively declaring war on the besieged Gaza Strip, leading to relentless bombardment and a growing death toll that now exceeds 4,651 Palestinians.

During the Cairo peace summit, Zhai emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire to end the ongoing hostilities as quickly as possible.

China firmly believes that employing force as a means of resolving the crisis will only perpetuate a vicious cycle of revenge, and the country advocates for an end to violence.

Despite maintaining strong relations with Israel, China has been a long-time supporter of the Palestinian cause.

Humanitarian Support for Palestinians

Zhai’s current diplomatic tour in the region aims to secure humanitarian aid access to Gaza and contribute to achieving a ceasefire. He has already engaged in discussions with foreign ministers from Palestine and Israel, as well as with representatives from the United Nations and the European Union.

China has been actively providing emergency assistance to Palestinians through both UN channels and bilateral means.

The recent opening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt allowed humanitarian aid trucks to enter Gaza, including a convoy of 17 vehicles carrying essential medical supplies, food, and water. With Gaza’s population numbering approximately 2.3 million people, the need for assistance remains critical.

China remains committed to doing “whatever is conducive” to promote dialogue, secure a ceasefire, and restore peace in Gaza, working to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region and pursue diplomatic solutions.
