Tamil Nadu, Karnataka rain: How to ride safe during heavy rainfall

Monsoon can be a spoilsport for motorcyclists, however, when the monsoon is approached right, it can actually be fun. We have seen so many stories on how to maintain your motorcycle during monsoon, how to prepare it for monsoon, and so on. Today, let’s look at how to ride in the rain, especially with the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka getting severe rainfall.

The first thing to do before heading out is to check all the electricals to ensure they’re working — horn, indicators, tail lamp, headlight, hazard lights, and other bits. Also, a good rule is to check for any exposed wiring and seal it. This is to avoid the rain getting into the wiring and causing short circuits, which can lead to disaster.

The goal to being safe is to be visible. Ensure that your lights are on full beam (during the day) and wear a high-vis jacket if possible. There are also a number of brands that make rainwear in highly visible colours, so choose them. However, keep in mind that riding in the night during heavy rainfall is something to avoid.

While averaging 100kmph on the highway during dry conditions is okay, it is not advisable in the rain. Rather, keep the speed low and keep it consistent. This way, you are covering distance on the highway and a steady pace also means that other vehicles can see you and avoid you. Also, given the low traction situations, braking and avoiding obstacles will be easier and safer.

Last but not least, have a clear visor on your helmet. Monsoon can make visibility low and the constant rain against the helmet will lower that. So swap your tinted visor for a clear one and you’re all set. Also, one bonus tip while riding in the rain is to ride on the left, as vehicles on the right can tend to splash water and that is an unpleasant situation to be in.
