Recently, Bollywood actor Vijay Varma revealed that he was bothered by his negative roles impacting how people see him in real life.

At the launch of SCREEN in Mumbai, Varma opened up about how “pretty girls and their mothers” have admitted to being scared of him, something that has bothered him.

Known for his negative roles in Darlings, Pink, and OTT series Dahaad, Varma said that playing “diabolical men” started with Pink. He recalled how that role, though minor, left a mark, especially at an all-women screening, where he encountered actresses he admired.

Varma said, “Lots of pretty girls and their mothers have told me they are scared of me, and it did bother me. The introduction of extremely diabolical men that I played started with Pink. It was a minor part, but I remember it vividly because it was an all-women screening. All the actresses were present, and I recall seeing people I had only watched on screen before.”

Varma spoke about meeting singer Sunidhi Chauhan at the Pink screening. He said that, after the movie ended, some people were crying. “Before the screening, everyone was happy, but by the end, some were crying and some didn’t want to leave. I tried to console Sunidhi Chauhan, but she told me, ‘Don’t come near me. I’m very scared of you.’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, what just happened?’ Then the director pulled me aside and told me I did a good job.”

Varma’s big break came with his role as Moeen in Gully Boy (2019), which brought him a lot of attention. After that, he became known for playing intense characters in projects like Darlings (2022), She, Mirzapur, and Dahaad (2023), where he portrayed a serial killer. His performances have solidified his place as a rising star in Bollywood.

Recently, Varma played a major role in Netflix’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack based on true events of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814. In the miniseries – based on the book Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury – Varma played Captain Devi Sharan.
