A 35-year-old BJP worker has been killed by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, with the group claiming he was disguised as a police informer, an official said on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Kudiam Mado, was reportedly targeted on the suspicion of being a police informer, according to local police officials, as PTI reported.
The incident took place at Somanpalli village under the Farsegarh police station limits, where a group of Naxalites stormed Mado’s house, dragged him outside, and strangled him to death. A pamphlet left at the crime scene by the Maoists’ national park area committee claimed responsibility for the killing, reiterating accusations of Mado acting as a police informer.
This marks the fifth civilian killing by Naxalites in Bijapur within the last seven days. On December 4, two former sarpanchs, including a BJP worker, were murdered in separate attacks. Two more women were killed in separate incidents on December 6 and December 7.
Upon being alerted on Wednesday morning, a police team rushed to the spot, sent Mado’s body for post-mortem, and launched a search operation to track down the assailants.
The Bastar division, comprising seven districts including Bijapur, has witnessed over 60 killings linked to Naxalite violence this year. Notably, nine BJP leaders have been killed in the region since January 2023, raising concerns over the security situation ahead of the state assembly elections next year.
Officials have intensified operations in the area to curb the growing threat posed by Naxal groups.
