Chhaava: Emotional Fan From Gujarat Tears Apart Theatre Screen During The Torture Scene; Gets Arrested

On Monday, a Gujarat man was arrested for vandalising RK cinema’s, a theatre, in Bharuch. He had gone to watch a late night screening of Vicky Kaushal and Laxman Utekar’s film Chhaava, on Sunday. As reported by the Free Press Journal, he was accused of tearing the theatre screen apart with his bare hands as he couldn’t watch Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s torture sequence. A video of the same has also gone viral on social media.

Identified as Jayesh Vasava, the accused, was reportedly drunk while watching the film in the theatre. During the scene of Aurangzeb, played by Akshaye Khanna, rebuking and torturing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Kaushal, he reportedly got riled up. In his inebriated state, the accused came up to the screen and damaged it in a fit of rage.

The media publication reports that he climbed up the podium and damaged the screen with a fire extinguisher. He proceeded to tear it open with his bare hands. The horrific act caused a commotion inside the theatre and he was dragged out by local security and the multiplex staff. He reportedly also abused a female staff member, who tried to stop him from vandalising the property.

According to FPJ, the general manager of the theatre revealed that because of the shocking incident, they incurred a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh. Many of their shows, which were scheduled on Monday, had been cancelled and rescheduled.

In just four days, Chhaava has emerged as a box office hit. Having collected a total of Rs 140 crore, the film has given Vicky Kaushal his career’s first biggest weekend opening. Despite having been released on Valentine’s Day, the film continues to rule over the screens. With no major releases this week, it is being speculated that the film may cross Rs 200 crores by the end of the week.

Adapted from Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel of the same name, Chhaava sees Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai Bhonsle and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal Shahenshah Aurangzeb. The movie also co-stars Diana Penty, Divya Dutta, Ashutosh Rana, and Vineet Kumar Singh among others in pivotal roles. The film was released on February 14, 2025.
