A high-rise building Skypan Apartments in Shastri Nagar, Andheri West, Mumbai caught on fire on January 6, 2025, at 9:15 pm. Singer Udit Narayan reportedly resides in the building. As per a recent report by News18, an apartment in the building was engulfed in flames on Monday night. The firefighters were swift to respond to the incident as they deployed eight fire engines to contain the fire and evacuate the building. The incident reportedly claimed the life Narayan’s 75-year-old neighbour, Rahul Mishra, who resided on the 11th floor of the building in the other wing.
As per the report, Mishra was rushed to Kokilaben Hospital, however, he was declared ‘brought dead’. He succumbed to asphyxiation from smoke inhalation. His relative Raunak Mishra, who was also present in the apartment during the fire, suffered severe injuries. The media publication reports that the fire occurred due to electrical equipment in Mishra’s flat. However, a bystander claimed that the family had burnt a diya, whose flame was caught by the curtains.

Mrs Mishra reportedly rushed downstairs screaming for help, however, by the time the watchman rushed to help them, it was too late. Disturbing videos of the incident are currently surfacing on the internet, leaving netizens enraged. Some are even demanding a fire station at Andheri West to help reduce such tragic incidents.

The media publication, quoting a Times Of India report, stated that the entire road leading to the building was blocked. The electrical supply was also switched off as soon as the residents were informed about the fire. Metal and glass shards kept falling on the ground from the flat, as the firemen continued to conduct cooling operations around 11:30 pm.
