Over the years, actor and comedian Kapil Sharma has entertained the audiences a lot. Be it through his films or his comedy shows, however, one of his old jokes have now surfaced on the internet amid the ongoing India’s Got Latent controversy. The clip, which is currently going viral on social media, is from his The Kapil Sharma Show (2023) where he jokes about students complaining about having to get up early for studying but have no issues to do so to watch cricket matches.

Cracking a joke on the younger generation’s obsession with cricket, he goes on to mention that they have to watch their parents’ ‘kabaddi’ too. Quoted by the Free Press Journal, he said, “Koi koi toh itne shaukeen hote hain, subah 2 baje hi uth jaate hain. Cricket dekhne ke liye. Cricket ka match shuru hona hota hai 4 baje. Phir ye maa baap ki kabaddi dekh ke so jaate hain.” The episode aired on February 19, 2023.

Having supposedly cracked a joke about parents’ sex, the joke received a lot of mixed reactions from the audiences sitting in the studio. While some appeared shocked, some awkwardly laughed it off. Special guest Archana Puran Singh was also seen laughing at the joke. During the episode, the Zwigato actor goes on to clarify, “Matlab maa baap lad rahe hote hain na.” For those who don’t know, the episode is available for everyone to watch on SET India’s official YouTube channel.

Netizens have taken to their X (formerly known as Twitter) handles to condemn Kapil for his joke and pointed how Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina were blamed for their controversial and vulgar comments of the latter’s comedy show India’s Got Latent. It sparked a debate online over selective outrage over vulgarity and indecency in comedy. Since the content creators are still facing heavy backlash for their inappropriate statements, netizens pointed out how similar humour had been a part of the mainstream Indian entertainment for a long time.

One wrote, “When are we cancelling Kapil Sharma?” Another pointed out, “@KapilSharmaK9 promoting good indian culture or was he promoting incest like @BeerBicepsGuy.” Other one said, “And everyone blaming Samay Raina.” Defending Kapil, one netizen wrote, “This is smart writing, ranveer openly copied the joke from the west. And there have many quite a lot offensive things being said on latent, samay failed at self censorship in editing, what to post and what not to.”

Talking about India’s Got Latent controversy, it all started when Ranveer Allahbadia asked a contestant on the show, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?” This caused a huge uproar on social media and invited criticism from celebrities, politicians and other personalities. It led to Samay Raina deleting all videos related to his show from his YouTube channel.
