Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has become the talk of the town with its international premiere and early reviews. The film is a multistarrer that follows a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her. As the trailer suggests he will leave an untold amount of horror in his wake until he has her. The film was in the making since 2015 and is reportedly a remake of the 1922 German film, which was originally based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.

Meanwhile, reports have also revealed that the first film in 1992 was also a remake of 1979 film Nosferatu the Vampyre, written and directed by Werner Herzog. While it is unclear if Eggers’ film has taken any inspiration from the book or the film, the reviews have suggested the recent release has much to offer. The casting of the film is also worth mentioning, as it includes some of the most well known names today. The role of Count Orlok will be played by Bill SkarsgĆ„rd who is also known for his iconic role in the IT series as the evil dancing clown Pennywise.

Veteran actor Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson along with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp are also leading the film. Nicholas Hoult will be portraying Thomas Hutter, the main protagonist of Nosferatu, while his wife and the object of desire will be played by none other than Rose. The role of Ellen Hutter, most noticed in the trailer has also garnered much praise for Lily-Rose Depp.

One of the promos showed Lily-Rose Depp, dutifully praying and being vigilant while asking something – or someone – to come to her. She then asks Willem Dafoeā€™s Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz if evil comes from within someone or if it works its way in from the outside. The trailer quickly picks up pace bringing in the horror and the dread which is to be anticipated from the film. Nicholas Hoult is also seen in the clip as Thomas Hutter along with the first look at the castle of Count Orlok ( played Bill SkarsgĆ„rd). The next trailer went on to reveal more details about the characters and Orlok’s obsession with Hutter.

Some of the clips have also revealed how it affects Ellen Hutter, making it hard for her to live a normal life, which is most likely to be one of the most horrifying results of his obsession with her. The film is set to open this weekend internationally and has already created quite the buzz due to the positive reviews. IGN’s critic state, “Nosferatu is Robert Eggers’ finest work, given how it both boldly stands on its own as a gothic vampire drama and astutely taps into the original texts.”

The Guardian praised the film, as the review read, “The film is handsomely produced and shot, with good performances, although for me SkarsgĆ„rdā€™s vampire is opaque and forbiddingly gruesome without being necessarily as scary as could be expected.” The critic also added, “This is an elaborate, detailed love letter to the original, intelligently respectful and faithful.”

Meanwhile, BBC review called Eggers the ideal man for the job. The review praise the production and added, “The costumes and props are all true to the 19th-Century setting, the spectacular outdoor scenes are shot on location in the Czech Republic and Romania, and some of the indoor scenes are illuminated only by candlelight.”

Nosferatu is expected to release in India in coming weeks.
