Cue the paparazzi! Angelina Jolie brought some major movie star energy to Hollywood last night. The star was on hand at the TCL Chinese Theatre for the premiere of Maria, her new Pablo Larrain film in which she stars as opera legend Maria Callas. Throughout her press tour for the project, Jolie has been delivering one chic ensemble after the next; The fashion has been understated and elegant, whether she’s wearing a vintage gown or a sleek three-piece suit. But last night it became clear that Jolie has cultivated a signature red carpet look, as no one does a slinky silk dress better than the A-lister.
For the premiere, Jolie wore a champagne-colored silky floor-length dress, paired with a draped black overcoat and tasteful silver jewelry. The dress hit all the right formal notes in a subdued way, perhaps owning to the fact that Jolie has a long history of wearing such silky designs. Her Marc Bouwer dress at the 2004 Oscars, and her Atelier Versace gown at the 2015 Critics Choice Awards, are proof that, sometimes, the best looks are the ones that make a subtle and timeless statement.
With virtually every fashion house and runway look at her disposal, Jolie’s commitment to the minimalist slip dress over the years is a respectable rarity. In an overwhelming arena of different trends and aesthetics, she knows what she likes, and she sticks to it. There’s something refreshing about a red carpet star who embraces consistency—especially when the end result hits every single time. Plus, compared to the ornate gowns Maria Callas used to wear on the stage, Jolie’s streamlined looks are a nice departure from her film character. Call it anti-method dressing.
