For a long time, my spring uniform was very much in the vein of Harry Styles and Paul Mescal. Worn-out Sambas, little shorts and a sports jacket. Maybe a few pink G&Ts in hand. A pair of aviator shades. You know the look. The “I don’t know what time it is, but I’m going to London Fields” look. The “there’s a slither of sun, can you see it?” out-of-office outfit that everyone in the UK will recognize as signaling nearly summer.
But, hey, there comes a time in everyone’s life when we need to go a little slicker and more polished. Which brings me neatly to my latest fixation: Styles’s chocolate-colored loafers from The Row, which he wore on a recent excursion around Mayfair, while clutching an iced matcha latte.
It can be hard to find the perfect pair of loafers—you don’t want them too chunky or, on the flip side, too slipper-like and grandad-ish—but I think Styles may have just stumbled upon the holy grail of spring shoes. Glossy yet casual with a subtle blocky heel, and worn with soft white socks (what else?), this pair from The Row are what I dream of when I think of “loafer.” Too bad they’re [reads notes] over $1,200. But, hey, you can get a relatively similar pair from GH Bass. Or these Mango loafers are even cheaper.
Chocolate brown loafers have been a big hitter this year, both on and off the runway (see: all the loafers in various earthy and brown tones for Gucci, Miu Miu and Acne Studios’s fall 2025 collections). That said, Styles has actually owned these loafers for a while (my colleague Daniel clocked him wearing them this time last year at the Royal Opera House after watching Swan Lake), so he is, as expected, ahead of the curve. Now I just need to catch up with him.
Shop loafers inspired his look, below.
