Here are the details for matchweek 24 of ISL 2024-25 with the latest match report coming first.
(Sourav 45′; Lagator 7′)
Kerala Blasters ended their disappointing season with a rather disappointing result as they let go an early 1-0 lead to draw away at Hyderabad FC. Centre-back Dusan Lagator opened the scoring for the Blasters before Hyderabad winger Sourav equalised on the stroke of half time.
This was the last league stage match of the season, with Blasters finishing 8th and Hyderabad 12th (both regardless of today’s result)
(Chhangte 8′, Karelis (P) 37′)
Mumbai City, needing a draw to ensure qualification to the playoffs, started with an intensity that saw Bengaluru FC crumble in the first half. The opener came from a chaotic sequence of events which started with Jorge Ortiz hitting the crossbar, Nikos Karelis missing an open goal and Lallianzuala Chhangte sliding in to poach the goal brilliantly.
Mumbai, starting with a Ortiz, Karelis and Vikram Pratap Singh frontline and a midfield that had both Chhangte and Brandon Fernandes were in all-out attack mode, and their pressure told when Karelis won a penalty which he converted coolly. The stats told the story of the match — BFC had zero shots on target (4 overall) and created 0.25 xG while City had 4 on target (of 11) and an xG of 2.35.
Clearly the dominant side, City held BFC at arm’s length comfortably to seal their playoff appearance, pipping Odisha to the sixth and final spot.
Mohammedan SC ended their debut ISL season with a stirring comeback from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 against Punjab FC in Kolkata on Monday evening.
Pulga Vidal scored early in the first half and Luka Majcen did the same in the second to put Punjab in command, but Marc Andre Schmerbock and Robi Hansda scored in the space of eight minutes to peg them back, and that is how the match ended.
Mohammedan ended their first ISL season bottom of the table, and Punjab finished 10th.
(Daniel Chima Chukwu 25′, 90+6′, Lukas Brambilla 45+2′, Irfan Yadwad 57′, 90′ – Rei Tachikawa 18′, Mohammed Sanan 62′)
Jamshedpur FC blew their chance to finish in the ISL’s top four this season, with a 5-2 loss to Chennaiyin FC away in their last league game of the season. Jamshedpur will now finish fifth, and will face either Bengaluru FC or NorthEast United away in the knockout playoff, depending on the result of Bengaluru’s game against Mumbai City FC on Tuesday.
Chennaiyin were superb in a no-pressure game for them, as they treated their fans to only their third win at home all season. Daniel Chima Chukwu scored twice, and so did Irfan Yadwad, as Chennaiyin simply blew Jamshedpu away.
(Boris Singh (OG) 62′, Greg Stewart 90+4′)
Mohun Bagan’s coronation as league shield winners was a party for their fans at the Salt Lake Stadium as they beat FC Goa 2-0 to finish the league phase eight points ahead of their nearest rivals in one of the most dominant seasons ever put in, in this league.
A Boris Singh own goal gave Bagan the lead early in the second half, and they made sure of the points with Greg Stewart’s late goal in second half stoppage time.
Both Bagan and Goa will now wait for the knockout playoffs to happen to find out their opponents in the semifinal. Bagan will face the winner of the match between the fourth and fifth placed teams, while Goa will face the winner of the game between the second and third placed teams.
(Nestor Albiach 59′, Alaaeddine Ajaraie 66′, 79′, Mohammed Bemmamer 87′)
Alaaeddine Ajaraie added another landmark to his name, by becoming only the fourth player in the ISL to score against every other team in a single season, joining Ferran Corominas, Kalu Uche and Miku Fedor on that list. Ajaraie scored the second goal of the gaame, as his brace helped NorthEast United beat a much-changed East Bengal 4-0 in Shillong on Saturday evening.
NorthEast took the lead in the 59th minute through their Spanish forward Nestor Albiach, after a trademark flowing team move down the left. Ajaraie flicked a clever backheel to Tondonba Singh on the left touchline, and he whipped in a lovely cross to present Nestor with a straightforward finish past Debjit Majumder. Ajaraie then scored two more goals of his own
WIth more than just one eye on their AFC Challenge League quarterfinal second leg against FK Arkadag in Turkmenistan on Wednesday, Oscar Bruzon rested all of East Bengal’s regular starters, barring PV Vishnu. Cleiton Silva was the only foreigner who started for them, as their young side failed to deal with NorthEast’s attacking threat. East Bengal finished their ISL league stage campaign with 28 points from 24 games, while NorthEast finished with 38.
If Chennaiyin beat Jamshedpur on Sunday, the NorthEast will finish in the top four, guaranteeing them a home game in their knockout playoff clash.
