Royal Enfield Scrambler 650 spied undisguised for for first time, EICMA debut likely

Royal Enfield has plenty of models in development in all three categories: 350cc, 450cc, and 650cc. In the 650cc displacement category, Enfield launched the Shotgun 650 earlier in January this year and the Super Meteor 650 a year before. However, it all started with the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 which were launched in 2018.

The Chennai-based bikemaker has a couple of more models lined up in the 650cc segment. One of them is the scrambler based on the same platform. Test mules of this motorcycle have been spied on numerous occasions over the last two years. However, in most cases the bike has been spotted in camouflage.

Now, a fully undisguised prototype of the 650cc scrambler has been revealed by an international media site on its YouTube channel. The video shows the scrambler in its full glory for the first time. This bike is rumoured to be named “Interceptor Bear 650” indicating its correlation with the Interceptor which is clearly visible in its design. A trademark for the same was filed by Royal Enfield some time back.

The leaked images suggest that the upcoming 650cc scrambler stays true to its aesthetics of a retro scrambler with obvious references to the Interceptor. However, there are some subtle differences from the regular Interceptor. For instance, the Interceptor Bear gets a different single-piece seat with a ribbed pattern.

Other distinct visual features of the upcoming Interceptor Bear include new LED taillamps and turn indicators, a stubby upswept exhaust, and wire-spoked wheels. The prototype shown in the image is seen wearing a three-tone colour scheme featuring black, yellow, and white. Another key difference are the wire-spoke wheels that are wrapped by knobby dual-purpose tyres.

That said, most of the elements are borrowed from the standard Interceptor including the round LED headlamps, side panels, handlebar, tubular grab rail for the pillion, and centre-set foot pegs. Also visible in the image is a single-pod instrument cluster, probably a full TFT digital or a semi-digital unit. We also expect features Bluetooth connectivity, switchable ABS, and USB charging.

In terms of hardware, it will get upside down front forks and twin gas-charged rear shock absorbers both offering more travel than the Interceptor. Braking duties will be carried out by single disc brakes at both ends. Being a scrambler, Royal Enfield will most likely utilise 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoked wheels.

In terms of engine specifications, the Royal Enfield Scrambler 650 will be powered by the same 648cc air-cooled parallel twin engine that makes 47bhp and 52Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The engine will have the same state of tune as the other four models that are currently on sale, however, Royal Enfield could alter the sprockets to set the motorcycle for its intended purpose.
