Chinese battery giant CATL has introduced a groundbreaking development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, unveiling its superfast charging Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery called Shenxing. This innovative battery claims to provide a driving range of 400 km with just a 10-minute charge, alleviating EV users’ charging anxiety and potentially revolutionizing the EV market.

The new battery technology, termed the world’s first 4C superfast charging LFP battery, has the potential to deliver over 700 km of driving range on a single full charge. Shenxing aims to address the challenge of fast charging anxiety among consumers, making EVs more accessible and convenient.

Shenxing’s success lies in its technological advancements in multiple areas. The battery employs the use of super electronic network cathode technology and fully nano-crystallized LFP cathode material, creating an optimal environment for the extraction of lithium ions and rapid response to charging signals.

Moreover, CATL’s second-generation fast ion ring technology enhances the intercalation rate of lithium ions, ensuring efficient charging processes. A newly developed superconducting electrolyte formula and improved ultra-thin SEI film contribute to reducing resistance of lithium-ion movement and improving overall conductivity.

The battery also leverages a brand-new superconducting electrolyte formula to improve conductivity, enabling a 0 to 80% state of charge (SOC) within 10 minutes at room temperature. Additionally, the cell temperature control technology ensures optimal operating temperatures, allowing a 0 to 80% charge in only 30 minutes even in temperatures as low as -10°C.

CATL has taken a significant steps for safety of Shenxing and have incorporated an upgraded electrolyte and a separator with a highly safe coating, providing dual protection for the battery. Additionally, intelligent algorithms regulate the temperature within the cells, contributing to a high level of safety during rapid charging.

The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Gao Han, revealed that mass production of the Shenxing battery is slated to commence by the end of this year, and vehicles equipped with this cutting-edge technology are set to hit the market in the first quarter of 2024. “We hope through continuous efforts to improve technology and reduce costs, Shenxing will become a standard product available for every electric vehicle,” Gao expressed, highlighting CATL’s commitment to making this innovative solution accessible to all.

CATL’s clients include prominent automakers like BMW, Honda, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
