Apple Is Testing Foldable iPad Pro With Hidden Face ID Technology: All We Know So Far

Apple has reportedly been working on a foldable-display iPad for some time, with various reports suggesting a screen size between 20 and 20.3 inches. A recent leak now indicates that Apple has developed a prototype of what could be its first foldable iPad, marking a significant step toward its potential launch.

Apple Foldable iPad Expected Specs, Features

According to tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Apple’s foldable iPad is expected to feature an 18.8-inch large display. The device may also come with a new “metal-super structure lens” that connects the transmitter and receiver components of a facial recognition system. This upgrade would bring an under-display 3D facial recognition system, an improvement over the current Face ID technology in iPhones and iPads.

If this leak is accurate, the foldable iPad will have one of Apple’s largest displays, surpassing the 13-inch iPad Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. This aligns with a 2024 report by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) that predicted Apple would launch an 18.8-inch iPad Pro by 2027. The foldable design suggests Apple is pushing boundaries with new technologies and design choices.

Additionally, analyst Ming Chi-Kuo mentioned in May 2024 that Apple might use an 18.8-inch or a 20.25-inch display made by LG Display for its first foldable iPad or MacBook. He also noted Apple’s goal to make the panel as crease-free as possible, addressing concerns common with foldable devices.

Kuo estimated that the foldable panel could cost between $600 to $650 (approximately Rs 52,325 to Rs 56,686), with the hinge likely costing between $200 to $250 (Rs 17,438 to Rs 21,798). This suggests that the foldable iPad will be positioned as a premium product with advanced features and high-end pricing.

For the unversed, Apple recently launched its new iPads, including the 11th-gen iPad and iPad Air with the M3 chip, both globally and in India. After being available for pre-order, these iPads are now available for purchase in India. The models come in Wi-Fi and cellular options, though accessories such as the Apple Pencil and keyboard are sold separately.
