TLDR: UPI is down again and we are here for the memes.
After the demonetization and fierce Digital India campaign, most Indians rely on Unified Interface Payment or UPI, via several apps for payments. No one carries a roll of rokda (cash) in their wallets anymore. It’s Google Pay (Gpay), PhonePe, Paytm, and similar apps that have even reduced business for ATMs in India.
UPI’s reliability is tested when the server is down and oh boy, everyone and their nana stuck at the billing counters right now are cursing their digital devtas. Downdetector, where users flag downtime of social media sites, has seen over 2000 complaints in the past hour or so. Funds transfer and payment transactions are failing for several users, some of whom shared screenshots over social media.
Major banks, including the SBI, HDFC, ICICI, etc., are affected. Users who carry cash are bragging online. Meanwhile, the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) took to social media and apologized for the inconvenience caused to the users. The NCPI also remarked that it is working on resolving the issue.
The internet reacted to the UPI downtime with hilarious memes featuring some of the classic Hera Phera ones from the vault.
