The satellite spectrum allocation by the Indian government has triggered India’s dominant telco the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio that earlier privately lobbied for auction. However, after Elon Musk’s criticism of the same, the DoT upheld the route of allocation. “We will do our best to serve the people of India with Starlink,” remarked the techpreneur after the news went viral on X/Twitter. However the new-found bitter rivalry between the two billionaires is intensifying as Musk took a direct dig at Ambani over Starlink’s entry in India. Meanwhile, during a recent event in New Delhi, the telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia remarked that spectrum allocation will be done administratively following due process with the pricing as per the telecom watchdog TRAI. Reportedly Reliance Jio had privately written to Scindia urging for a fair process of auction to grant a level-playing field for the Indian competitors. Elon Musk had criticized the same as unprecedented, and argued the administrative allocation of spectrum was in line with global trend.
While a section of the desi Internet is looking forward to Starlink’s entry in India, however not everyone is happy with Musk taking a jibe at India’s largest telecom giant. Some netizens asked Musk if Starlink would provide dirt cheap internet like Jio does. Some even stretched their jingoistic imagination stating that allowing Starlink in India would be a threat to national security. Meanwhile a few netizens urged Elon Musk to talk to (Ambani and Adani’s) salesman / broker.
