Infinix has officially revealed that it will launch its mid-range Note 50 series in Indonesia on March 3. With the brand expanding its reach in global markets, including India, it’s likely the series will soon make its way to other regions. While there aren’t many details available about the new devices, one key feature is already creating a buzz: the integration of DeepSeek R1, a Chinese AI chatbot, into the Folax voice assistant.
The teaser video for the Note 50 series mentions Infinix AI, but it doesn’t go into specifics just yet. However, a report from GSMArena suggests that Infinix plans to integrate DeepSeek R1 into its Folax voice assistant, which could enhance the assistant’s ability to handle voice commands and searches with greater speed and accuracy. This collaboration could significantly elevate the AI capabilities of Infinix devices.
For those who aren’t familiar with DeepSeek R1, it’s a reasoning model developed by a Chinese company, designed to rival AI systems like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini. Unlike traditional pre-trained models, such as GPT-4 or Gemini 2.0, reasoning models like DeepSeek R1 are created to mimic human-like thinking. This makes them particularly good at tasks like coding, scientific research, and complex multi-step planning. The integration of such advanced AI could provide Infinix users with a much better and more intuitive voice assistant experience.
What’s even more exciting is that DeepSeek R1 is open-source and free to use, making it an attractive option for smartphone manufacturers who want to add powerful AI features to their devices without the hefty licensing fees. While brands like Google and Samsung rely on their own AI systems, and Apple has incorporated ChatGPT into Siri, Infinix could be the first smartphone brand to bring DeepSeek R1 into the fold. This would give Infinix a unique edge in the competitive AI space.
Currently, Infinix’s Folax voice assistant uses Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI APIs to leverage the GPT-3.5 language model. I had the chance to try the Folax assistant on a few Infinix devices last year, and while it was a fun novelty, it struggled to manage more complex queries. But with the potential integration of DeepSeek R1, Infinix is aiming to make its voice assistant smarter and more reliable.
Infinix is expected to officially announce the DeepSeek integration with the Note 50 series on February 26. If this comes to fruition, it could mark a turning point in the smartphone industry’s use of AI, with Infinix leading the charge in making advanced reasoning models available in affordable devices. As the launch date approaches, tech enthusiasts and potential buyers are eagerly waiting to see how this AI upgrade will work and whether it will live up to expectations.
