During Prime Minister Modi’s recent two-day trip to Kuwait, aimed at signing agreements to enhance bilateral relations between India and the Gulf country, a video has gone viral showing PM Modi conversing in Marathi with an Indian man about children’s education.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured a labour camp in Kuwait, a trip the External Affairs Ministry characterized as symbolic of his commitment to the well-being of Indian workers overseas during his significant two-day visit to the Gulf country. PM Modi received a warm welcome at the Gulf Spic Labour Camp during his visit to see the Indian workers residing there. He engaged with different laborers, encouraging them and spent time with the workers.

As the initial event of his trip to Kuwait, Modi toured the Gulf Spic labor camp located in the Mina Abdullah region, which houses approximately 1,500 Indian workers. He engaged with a diverse group of Indian workers from various states, asked about their health, and also joined some of them at a table in the Gulf Spic Labour Camp when snacks were being served.

In the viral video, PM Modi is shown speaking with a labourer from Ratnagiri, who is among the numerous workers Modi met at the Gulf Spic Labour Camp in Kuwait.

During the interaction between the man from Ratnagiri and PM Modi, he is heard asking him in Marathi, the main language of Maharashtra, “Kiti varsha zaali?” (How long have you been employed here?) to which the man responds, “9 varsha zaali” (9 years).

PM Modi keeps inquiring, “Kaay vishesh mag?” (What unique plans do you have?) to which the man answers, “Progress zaala aahe.” (there is progress). During further conversations, the man informs Modi about his efforts to educate his children and mentions that he has married off his daughter in Ratnagiri after successfully educating her, expressing his aspiration to provide education for his children. PM Modi responded by urging the importance of educating the children.

Earlier Conversations With Indian Workers Overseas

Prime Minister Modi has visited with Indian workers overseas, touring residential camps in Saudi Arabia and Qatar in 2016, as well as a labor camp in Abu Dhabi in 2015. He underscored India’s commitment to the welfare of migrant workers and has backed the e-Migrate project since 2014 to facilitate safe migration. The Modi administration improved the Overseas Employment Division by establishing 16 Protector General of Emigrants offices throughout India.

Hala Modi: PM’s Visit To Kuwait

Modi’s two-day visit to Kuwait marks the first by an Indian prime minister in 43 years, welcomed warmly by the Indian diaspora. Invited by Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Modi expressed eagerness to meet key Kuwaiti leaders to establish a future-oriented partnership. During his stay, he engaged with the local Indian community, which constitutes 21% of Kuwait’s population, and attended a cultural performance showcasing Indian folk arts. Addressing the ‘Hala Modi’ event, Modi praised the community’s diversity. Kuwait is a major trading partner for India, with trade valued at USD 10.47 billion in 2023-24 and substantial Indian investments.
